TortoiseNapoleon died on St. Helena in 1821. Eleven years after his death, the oldest known land animal in the world, a 184-year-old giant tortoise was born. It is about to join the modern world.

The island of St. Helena – a mere 67 square miles of rock right out in the middle of the Atlantic, 1,300 miles from Angola and 2,000 miles from Brazil – is now on the brink of joining the rest of the world with the construction of its first airport.

    I heard the tortoise was patiently waiting for the continental drift to bring the island back with a continental land bridge….Its cousin, who was a friend of Darwin in the Galapagos, passed away in the 1980’s.
