A Moment When Chemical Weapons Might Have Been Useful

Among the German wounded in the Ypres Salient in Belgium on October 14, 1918, was Corporal Adolf Hitler, temporarily blinded by a British gas shell and evacuated to a German military hospital at Pasewalk, in Pomerania.

When he regained his sight, after November 11, he found that Germany had surrendered.

He decided that Germany had not lost the war, but had been stabbed in the back by socialists and Jews.

The British gas attack had failed.
